MARCH FOR SCIENCE

march sign1879_2550_largebill nye1878_2518_large

On April 22, in conjunction with Earth day, scientists and science-supporting citizens gathered worldwide to celebrate the role that science plays in our everyday life and to support science and evidence-based research. Protesters gathered in over 600 hundred cities with an estimated 70,000 participants in Boston and over 150,000 in several California cities, aggravated by President Donald Trump’s threats to cut the budgets of agencies that fund scientific work.  The peaceful marches were to raise awareness of science and promote science over politics and facts over fiction.

The main March for Science rally was at Washington’s National Mall where speakers spoketo the need to continue research in areas that support health and climate change and to promote policy-based legislation regardless of political affiliation.

At a time of so much political unrest and “alternative facts”, science is an anchor to our environment, the world and our well-being. Without proper funding and attention to the significance of continued scientific research, we risk losing site of the environmental changes that are endangering our planet for current and future generations.

In the name of science, we proudly wear our men’s and women’s novelty science socks and encourage you to do the same !

EASTER FOOT FASHION

striped easter socks

Easter is a gateway to spring, a much welcomed season as we await new flowers, fresh grass and the chirping of birds in the early morning. Easter is also a reminder of our childhood when the entire family got new clothes and dressed up for church and family gatherings.  Whether we liked it or not, it was tradition and we were supposed to look our finest. Today, Easter is still important but traditions have changed and getting new clothes for the holiday is not what it used to be.

So where did this tradition of dressing up for Easter begin?
This tradition of dressing up in the spring dates back to ancient times. It seems that many cultures celebrated spring with new traditions that included wearing new clothes to represent renewal, and optimism. Pagan worshipers believed that wearing new clothes brought good luck. Iranians similarly wore new clothes in the first day of spring, celebrating their New Year as did the Chinese as they celebrated Lunar New Year, symbolizing new beginnings.
In the early days of Christianity, around 300 A.D. the Roman Emperor Constantine declared that his court must wear the finest new clothing on Easter. Eventually, worships discarded their old clothes for new ones after wearing them for weeks during Lent.
In America, we did not celebrate Easter traditions until after the Civil War. The devastation of the war was so depressing that women traded their dark mourning clothes for more cheerful colors of spring to celebrate “The Sunday of Joy”, as Easter represented hope following dark times. In the 1870’s the New York Easter Parade began, when women wore the most fashionable clothing and walked down 5th Ave. People of all walks of life watched the parade to see the latest fashion trends and retailers used the parade to market their clothing, making Easter as important as Christmas.

By Mid-century, many Americans bought clothes a couple of times a year, Easter being one of those times. They shopped primarily locally or from catalogs. Wearing new clothes represented prosperity in a wholesome All-American lifestyle.
This year Easter is April 17, giving you plenty of time to think about your holiday outfit.  If you are looking for a springy outfit for the weekend to go to church, brunch or family get together, may we suggest some fun colorful socks? How about the ice cream cone? These socks are  a delicious addition to your spring wardrobe and would look great with a pair of sandals or short booties. What a fun way to dress up a skirt or dress! Or how about the narwhals or mermaids? They are a beautiful accessory to add a bit of mystique and color to any outfit.  Ladybugs and bumble bees are a fashionable nod to spring.  And guys, socks are the perfect way to add some color to your holiday attire. Our bacon socks or chicken and waffles are perfect to wear to brunch. Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing is springy and fun as well.
So, this year if you are not getting an entire new outfit to replicate your childhood traditions, add a pair of Foot Traffic novelty socks and know that your are starting your spring with your best foot forward.

BRIDESMAID SOCKS

loyal-books-gift-basketLet’s take a moment to think about the ladies you’ll have stand with you on your wedding day. Whether they’re old friends, new gal pals, or family members who have been with you your whole life, if you want them up there with you, they’re special in some way. So, why not celebrate that individuality as part of their bridesmaids’ gifts? Sure, it’s traditional to give your bridesmaids things like pre-wedding manicures or a bit of bling to wear at the altar when they stand with you, but why not also get them a fun gift that celebrates what you love most about them?

Sure, you knew we were going to say this, but socks really are the ideal gift for anyone, whenever you need to give a gift—yes, even your bridesmaids! Fun novelty socks for ladies never go out of style, and they’re always useful. Plus, it’s a great way to show your lady friends why exactly you love them so much—and that you really think about what makes them so special and unique.

You might even be able to incorporate the socks into your ceremony! If you’re doing a casual dress ceremony, your bridesmaids could wear them as they walk up to the altar, for example. Or, you could use them to give each of your girls a little “pop” of individuality down by their ankles, even when they’re all wearing the same dress! But even if you’re doing a more traditional ceremony, you can still incorporate fun socks. You and your squad could change into them after the ceremony and pictures if you’re changing into comfy shoes. Heck, why not make your reception a “sock hop” that your guests will never forget? Or, if that’s not your style, you could put them on for a memorable, unique photo op! Just think—you and your pals, sitting on a wall or bench or wherever, feet dangling in cute socks that represent what makes you all… you.

Here at Foot Traffic, we have socks for everyone. Is one of your bridesmaids a music teacher? Get her our Big Treble socks! What about an Anglophile friend obsessed with Dr. Who and Sherlock? Our Union Jack socks are sure to please! One of the gals super into mermaids? Oh, yes, we have mermaid socks, too. And for the friend who’s always recommending the best books you’ve ever read, what about our Loyal Books socks?

Here’s a cute idea—even if you’d rather keep socks out of the ceremony itself, why not put together little gift baskets for your bridesmaids! If you get them something sparkly, nestle that in there with cute soaps, a lipstick in that shade they always wear, a pampering face mask… and socks!

Tie the knot in style with fun socks for ladies from Foot Traffic. Check out the Foot Traffic website for the socks your best girlfriends will adore!

FOOT TRAFFIC AT NY NOW SHOW

IMG_1755booth

I love New York City. It is always a great place to be no matter what time of year. This year FOOT TRAFFIC once again participated in the NY NOW Gift Show, showcasing our latest and greatest men’s and women’s  novelty socks. We were not alone. Many other sock companies were also at the show and it is apparent that socks are here to stay!
We showcased many new designs and had great feedback from retailers across the country, mostly boutique owners looking for new sock designs.  From walking the show it looks like there is no limit to what is said on a sock and what people are willing to wear to make a statement.  We love the competition because if the category is successful, so are we as “all boats rise” as they say.
The entire gift show was busy with retailers doing some serious shopping to make their storefront unique and full of gifts for the contemporary shopper. No longer are nik-nacs popular. Today, top items are useful and/or pampering such as soap, candles, socks, jewelry, home décor items and things that show the recipient that you know their taste.  We were excited to see so many new ideas this year.
While at the show, we spoke with one retailer, Abbey, who currently co-owns a boutique with her sister Sarah Douglas. Shop Beautiful is located in the charming Brookside suburb of Kansas City, MO, and has been around for 81 years.   They share a consistent mission: “meaningful, personal gifts that will brighten someone’s day.”  Always keeping their products fresh and relevant, they recently redesigned their store and were at the New York show looking for the latest gifts  for next season.  Foot Traffic socks are one of the gift lines that they carry to make their store fresh and fun. Check out their story recently posted in the Kansas City Star.

http://www.kansascity.com/news/business/biz-columns-blogs/cityscape/article131681734.html

We always learn from talking to our retailers about their needs and the changing consumer buying patterns.  Good news is, socks are a great gift category for both men and women and our Foot Traffic socks are under the $10 retail price so they make a great gift for anyone, satisfying both the retailer and the consumer.  So now that we have returned from the show, it is back to the drawing board to create new socks for the next show!!

NOVELTY SOCKS FOR YOUR MAN

feb 14mens-valetines

No Man Should be Without a Pair of Novelty Socks!
It’s already February and Valentine’s Day is coming up soon, and here at Foot Traffic we can’t think of a better gift than some great novelty socks for men. While chocolates, flowers, and jewelry gifts all come to mind when Valentine’s Day rolls around, men can be a little trickier to shop for. That’s why novelty socks are so great! They’re a personal gift that’s also functional, unique, and thoughtful. It doesn’t matter if the man in your life works in an office or in a bar—odds are, he’ll need to wear socks. And getting him socks that reflect his chosen career—or inner life—can be just the right way to show him you’re thinking about him, whether it’s Valentine’s Day, or any day of the year.

It’s becoming less and less common for men to have to put on a suit and tie every day for work, but most offices still have dress codes. Khakis and button-downs or collared shirts with a company logo are still popular ways to build unity in the workplace and keep everyone dressed appropriately at all times. But then again, that cuts out the tie—the traditional way men have been able to express their personality while dressed for business. And yet, even dressed casually, all people are individuals—and most people like to express their individuality in little ways, as they can, when they can. Novelty socks are a great way to do that!

For example, the man in your life may work in an office, but then when he comes home he practices his guitar for a bit, and dreams of being in a band. In that case, a pair of our Men’s Guitar Neck Socks or Men’s All Over Guitars Socks or Men’s Drum Set Socks can help him feel like a rock star even when he’s doing data entry. Or maybe his hobby is grilling, or fixing that old hot rod that he has sitting on blocks in the back yard. In that case, check out our Men’s Tool Socks, or our Men’s Mechanic Socks. Or maybe he just really loves tacos, pizza, or beer! (Who doesn’t love tacos and pizza and beer?) In that case, check out our Men’s Taco Socks, our Men’s Pizza Slice Socks, or our Men’s Beer and Pretzel socks.

If your fella’s tastes run to the athletic, we have sporty socks, too! Our Men’s Baseball Socks will remind him of his favorite team even if he’s sitting at his desk or meeting with clients! Or, if he’s the coach of your kid’s sports team, or maybe even his company’s Ultimate Frisbee team, our Men’s I’m The Coach Socks are really just the thing.

Novelty socks for men aren’t just for lounging—these days, men can wear them everywhere: to work, on the weekend, on the holidays!  Foot Traffic offers a special where you can get three pairs of socks for $24. Mix and match a few pairs your man will love and surprise him this Valentine’s Day. His feet will be warm, and so will his heart.

Everyone needs socks! So stop by the Foot Traffic website and order up some fun and practical pairs for everyone, including your best guy.

LET’S ORDER PIZZA!

ERdeVnyIlHd1tbqVQPiS9V3KAX2nZssZdD4_YbUoIB8

The winter sky is grey, it’s cold outside, and post-holiday blues calls for staying home and curling up with a partner, a good book, a furry pet, or all the above.  Staying home can be a good thing as we catch up on our Netflix, new TV series, and just relaxing as we catch up with ourselves. We cooked ourselves into a frenzy over the holidays and now is the time to order in.  It’s the perfect time to order a pizza.

Did you know that every day Americans eat 100 acres of pizza and 350 slices are sold every second? Three billion pizzas are sold in the US each year. The average American eats 46 slices every year. I certainly do my part.

So, what is America’s favorite pizza topping? For years cheese pizza lingered at the top of the list but pepperoni has taken the lead as the favorite pizza topping. But what follows has changed over time. In and article in Fox News, according to a Harris Poll taken in January 2,193 adults surveyed online voted the following:
Favorite Pizza Toppings:

  1. Pepperoni
  2. Sausage
  3. Mushroom
  4. Cheese/Plain
  5. Onions
  6. Bacon
  7. Ham/Canadian bacon
  8. Pineapple
  9. Peppers/Sweet peppers

Least Favorite Pizza Toppings:

  1. Anchovies
  2. Mushrooms
  3. Pineapple
  4. Onions
  5. Olives
  6. Pepperoni
  7. Peppers/Sweet peppers
  8. Sausage
  9. Meat (general mentions)
  10. Cheese/plain

As far as WHO has the best pizza, it looks like New York is the best state to get a pizza with Illinois coming in a close second.

Now about the crust. It looks like there is a close margin between regular crust, (18%) deep dish (15%), and stuffed crust (14%). Millennials overwhelmingly prefer the thinner crust.  Of course they do.

That being said, with only 2% of the population saying they don’t like pizza (what is wrong with you?!) it’s time to settle in, get your men’s or women’s pizza socks on and order your favorite pizza with all of your favorite toppings!

Boots, Socks, and Smiles

tall boot socksbooties-and-socksllama

I’m done with winter, and it’s still January.  I have had enough cold, my boots are  dirty from the melted  snow, and my car needs to go through the car wash yet again. I look in my wardrobe and all I can think about is what will be the warmest outfit because starting in October, I am continuously cold until April. So, that limits what I choose to wear during this transition period called “winter”.  I am a casual dresser so no need to get all gussied up for my co-workers since we are all trying to survive a cold office environment.  What usually feels the coldest are my feet. I am not sure what you wear during the winter to keep your feet warm but I wear a lot of boots, booties,  and socks.

I am curious what socks others wear with their boots  and booties.

With tall boots do you wear ankle socks or no-shows? Do you care if your socks match if you are wearing tall boots and you can’t see the socks or do you wear knee high socks so they peek out the top?  Do you wear heavy socks? It is a mystery because I do all of the above.  For me, it depends on the fit of my boots, how long I will be wearing them, and if they are booties or tall boots.  Most of the time I wear booties and let my socks show as I scrunch the socks around my ankles.  When I wear tall boots, I sometimes let the knee highs show and other times, I just wear novelty  socks to cover my feet and they never show.

Here is what I have on today. Llama socks under my tall boots. Yes, llama novelty socks . No one can see them but they sure put a smile on my face this morning as I got dressed and headed out the door.  It was a grey, wet morning and all it took was a hot cup of coffee and my llama socks to know the day was going to be OK.  If I start my day with a smile, I usually go to bed the same way.

So, next time you are dressing for the cold winter days and layering up the usual suspects to stay warm, I suggest you wear a fun pair of socks even if no one ever sees them.  It’s the little things, you know?!

Holiday Retreat

moose

There is something about the first snow that is always exciting. When those flakes start falling it is magical. This past week it snowed for the first time this year and I decided to stay at home and get things done rather that venture out in the bitter cold. It was a good feeling to just be at home and doing holiday chores from my own haven. And to be perfectly honest, I wore my “at-home-attire” which is my most comfy leggings and non-matching long t-shirt, socks, no make-up and my hair pulled back in an unidentifiable style.  I realized that whatever I needed to do out of the house could wait.
I felt giddy that I did not have to interact with anyone and I could claim this day just mine, to share only with my dogs.  I never turned on the television. I got so much done— finished ordering holiday gifts online; cleaned the kitchen and bathrooms; addressed my holiday cards and most importantly, I sat on the couch and read.  I find that with a crazy work, family and social schedule, I forget what a good book can do to challenge my thinking and take me to places I don’t normally go.  I enjoyed hot tea and cozied up in a warm blanket next to the fire, spending two glorious hours just absorbed in a book, Rebecca, a classic Gothic novel, which I highly recommend.
I admit there were moments when I thought I needed to clean up and go out to run errands but one look in the mirror, I realized what the process would involve so I just stayed in.
During the course of a normal day, I have moments of time when I take a small break but never is it an entire day. Sick days don’t count.   So when you are cursing the snow or menacing weather, try taking a day in your own home to enjoy just for you. No make-up, no shoes, no fancy clothes, no meetings, no people.   It is the  best gift you can give yourself in the crazy holiday rush and beyond.

Dress Up Your Autumn and Winter Outfits with Fashion Socks | Foot Traffic

dcbmuoxvqfid2wclpvno8aa5fm0v0u05jybxi12p_44

The fall and winter seasons mean different things to different people. Some get extra excited about eggnog, holiday treats, and pumpkin spice lattes, while others love to see the different festive displays. Some people turn to family gatherings where warm memories and bright futures bring people together, and some blow off steam and cut loose at parties with co-workers and friends. But at Foot Traffic, we get most excited about… socks.

Yes, socks! That’s right—well, socks, and legwear in general. When the fall and winter fashion socks come in, we’re over the (harvest) moon. That’s because socks, leggings, tights, stockings, and leg warmers are just as crucial to any cold-weather fashion wardrobe as coats, hats, sweaters, and scarves. Not only do socks, leggings, and tights keep your tootsies warm and your legs comfy when the temperature drops, they’re also an ideal way for you to express your fall and winter style.

Often the new fall and winter clothing is earth-toned, or features subtle pieces evoking the season: rich purples, warm browns, cool blacks and grays, and dark blues. For color addicts like us, that’s a fine place to start… but we’re always eager to bring the spectacle of fall leaves to our wardrobes, along with the bright colors of Christmas, the warm lights of Hanukah, and the glittery cheer of the new year. And socks, leggings, tights, stockings, and leg warmers are the perfect way to do that!

No matter who you are, or where you work, legwear is a perfect way to bring a little excitement to your wardrobe. Even the most conservative office dress codes allow for tights, so why not pick up some patterned goodies for yourself and your friends in the office this holiday season? Tights, leggings, and socks are great holiday gifts or stocking stuffers for anyone on your Santa list. And as they’re such an economical (but thoughtful) gift, you barely even have to check it twice! Really, this time of year everyone loves fleecy leggings that keep the chill at bay, fun over-the-knee socks with cats or foxes that peek over the top of the season’s cute boots, sparkly tights that dress up any little black dress, and novelty socks featuring Santa kitties, snowmen, gingerbread men, “ugly sweaters,” and more to wear on Christmas morning!

Here at Foot Traffic we’re all about celebrating the change of seasons in style, however you like to do it. Whether you’re looking to jazz up your own wardrobe or help your friends get in the holiday spirit, we have the perfect options for you. And with our great, easy-to-use website, even if the holiday traffic is frightful, we promise that shopping with Foot Traffic will always be delightful.

Looking to spice up your wardrobe and your holiday giving with the latest and greatest legwear and socks? Our 2016 Fall Lookbook is a great place to start!
